CHALLENGE (21 DAYS): Day 10 The drapery exercise

Theme Shadow work 1

Welcome to the 10th day of my personal challenge

SUCCEEDING IN DRAWING A REALISTIC PORTRAIT IN 21 DAYS WITH MY RIGHT HAND

Today I am tackling one of my worst drawing nightmares drapery

Why 3 main reasons for this

  • TIME CONSUMING
  • LABORIOUS
  • COMPLEX

TIME CONSUMING : These are simple lines but drawing them takes time A difficulty that can increase depending on the type of fabric and the number of folds To make the task easier and stick to my 15 minute timing I chose to make this sketch on a small paper format A5 type and divide my work over 2 days sketching and shading !

LABORIOUS For me as a portraitist still lifes are a horror And drapery takes the cake It remains a very educational exercise but it requires being precise and accurate in mastering the scale of values to give a perfectly realistic result !

COMPLEX 3 reasons for this different types of folds vertical hook and U shaped respecting the fluidity of the fabric its weight its thickness and all the shadows counter shadows and reflections that its folding will cause You no longer know

where to start !.

STEP 1 Create a sketch 15’

On an A5 format I roughly draw the vertical lines that make up my drawing starting from one edge and making sure to draw all the lines that make up the fold and marking the shadows with hatching as I go

To be continued tomorrow with the placement of values and contrasts
